String Theory Made Simple
Think of a guitar string that has been tuned by stretching the string under tension across the guitar. Depending on how the string is plucked and how much tension is in the string, different musical notes will be created by the string. Similarly in String Theory elemental particles are like the musical notes. However in String Theory the strings aren't on a guitar (for obvious reasons) they are floating in space-time. String Theory is meant to be a theory of Quantum Gravity. This means that the strings have to be about a millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a centimeter. The strings are so tiny that we can't see it with today's technology. So to conclude string theory physicist are trying devise a way to test the theory than looking for little strings which can't be seen.
